Liposuction Treatment, Cheshire
Liposuction (or liposculpture) is a body-sculpting procedure to remove fat that is unresponsive to dieting and exercising. It is not an alternative to dieting and patients should be close to what they see as their ideal weight before embarking on surgery.
The procedure re-contours the body at a given weight to produce a slimmer and better proportioned figure. Liposuction is used effectively to reduce love handles, saddlebags, a double-chin, a bulge around the waistline, or other unsightly fatty deposits in order to develop a better shape and create a more beautiful body.

Understanding The Liposuction Journey
Liposuction surgeons can opererate on small areas under local anaesthetic, but larger areas of liposuction are best carried out under a general anaesthetic. Through small incisions, a narrow tube or “cannula” is inserted and used to suck out the fatty tissue beneath the skin using a vacuum.
The surgeon determines the amount of fat to be removed. After eliminating the excess fat, tapes or a compression garment are applied to the area in order to prevent bleeding, reduce swelling, and support the tissues as they settle.
There are a number of different types of liposuction procedures, such as tumescent, ultrasound assisted liposuction or smart liposuction. They have developed to make fat removal easier, minimise blood loss and speed up recovery. Ultimately, the final result and correction of contour irregularities depends on the skill of the surgeon.
The length of the recovery will depend on how extensive of a liposuction operation the patient undergoes. Smaller areas are treated as day cases whilst liposuction of larger volume and greater areas will require an overnight stay in hospital.
It is not usually a painful procedure and only simple analgesia is required. Tapes and support garments are used to hold the skin in place post-operatively. The tapes are removed 10-12 days later and any support garments are usually worn for a month.
Most patients return to normal day to day activities after the tapes are removed, but impact exercise is best avoided for 4-5 weeks.
Complications are unusual. There will be bruising after treatment and there may be oozing from the small wounds, but haematomas, (collections of blood), are uncommon. Infection is rare. Some tethering of the skin may be seen in mobile areas, such as the tummy, but this usually settles.
The treated areas may be numb afterwards and this may take many months to recover. Irregularities can be left which may require adjustment, often as a simple local anaesthetic procedure, but results are dependant on the skill of the surgeon. Liposuction does not treat cellulite.
